Problema Solution
A bulk wholesaler wishes to mix some candy worth 45 cents per pound and some worth 80 cents per pound in order to make 350 lb of a mixture worth 65 cents per pound. How much of each type of candy should be used?
Answer provided by our tutors
Let 'x' represent the pounds of 45 cents per pound candy, then (350-x) represents the pounds of 80 cents per pound candy. 45, 80 and 65 cents are represented as 0.45, 0.80 and 0.65 as decimals.
350*0.65=0.45x+(350-x)0.80
x=150
350-150=200
So 150 pounds of 0.45 cent candy should be combined with 200 pounds of 0.80 cent candy.
