Problema Solution

A chemist wants to make a mixture which is 72% iodine. How many liters of 66% iodine should be combined with 8 liters of 78% iodine to create a 72% solution

Answer provided by our tutors

let 'x' represent the liters added to 66% iodine, then '8+x' represents the total of 72% iodine

72% is 0.72, 66% is 0.66 and 78% is 0.78

0.72(x+8)=0.66x+0.78(8)

solve for x

x=8

So 8 liters of 66% iodine should be added to the 8 liters of 78% iodine in order to create a 72% solution (which will be 16 liters of 72% solution).
