A concert hall has three sections: the main floor, the balcony, and the gallery. There were twice as many balcony tickets sold as gallery tickets, and 225 more main floor tickets than balcony tickets.

Write a variable expression to represent the number of tickets sold in each section.

For a recent concert 1020 tickets were sold. How many tickets were purchased for each section?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

x = gallery tickets sold

2x = balcony tickets sold

2x + 225 = main floor tickets

The total number of tickets sold was 1020:

x + 2x + (2x + 225) = 1020

........

x = 159 tickets

There were 159 gallery, 2*159 = 318 balcony and 318 + 225 = 543 main floor tickets sold.
