Problema Solution

A cruise ship made a trip of 220 mi in 15 h. The ship traveled the first 60 mi at a

constant rate before increasing its speed by 4 mph. Then it traveled another 160 mi at

the increased speed. Find the rate of the cruise ship for the first 60 mi

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

d = 220 mi

t = 15 h

x = rate of speed for first 60 mi

(x+4) = rate of speed for remaining 160 mi

Since travel time=distance/speed we have:

60/x + 160/(x + 4) = t

60/x + 160/(x + 4) = 15

........

x = 12 mph

The rate of the cruise ship for the first 60 miles was 12 mph.
