Problema Solution

A garden is shaped like a rectangle whose perimeter is 60ft. The length is 4ft more than the width. Find the length and the width.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

l = the length

w = the width

P = 60 ft is the perimeter

Since P = 2l + 2w we have:

2l + 2w = 60 divide both sides by 2

l + w = 30

The length is 4 ft longer than the width:

l = w + 4

We have the following system of equations:

l + w = 30

l = w + 4

........

l = 17 ft

w = 13 ft

the length is 17 ft while the width is 13 feet.
