Problema Solution

A manufacturing firm wants to package its product in a cylindrical container 2 ft. high with surface area 16π ft^2. What should the radius of the circular top and bottom be?

Answer provided by our tutors

Total surface area of the cylinder is the sum of the top and bottom surface areas added to the side surface area.

Let 'T' represent total surface area in ft^2, 'r' is the radius of the cylinder in ft and 'h' is the height of the cylinder in ft, then:

T = 2*π*r^2 + 2*π*r*h, where π = 3.14

We also know that T = 16π and h = 2 ft:

2*π*r^2 + 2*π*r*2 = 16π

........

r = 2 ft

We need to ignore the negative solution -4 since the radius is always a positive number.

The radius of the cylinder should be 2 feet.
