a race car needs a fuel mixture that is 20% alcohol how many liters of 10% alcohol fuel mixture must be combined with 100 liters of a 40% alcohol mixture in order to obtain the required percentage of alcohol?

Answer provided by our tutors

Represent a percentage as a decimal, so 20% is 0.20, 10% is 0.10 and 40% is 0.40.  Let 'x' represent the amount of 10% alcohol fuel to be produced, then:

0.20(100+x)=0.10x+100*0.40

click here to solve for x

x=200

So 200 liters of 10% fuel should be combined with 100 liters of 40% fuel to produce 300 liters of 20% fuel.
