Problema Solution

A rectangle area is to be fenced in along a straight river bank as illustrated. the length of the fenced in area is to be 3 feet greater than the width, and the total amount of fencing to be used is 63 feet. find the width and length o the fenced in area

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

x = the width of the fence

x + 3 = the length of the fence

P = 63 ft the perimeter of the rectangular area

Since P = 2*length + 2*width we have:

P = 2(x + 3) + 2x

Now we have the following equation:

2(x + 3) + 2x = 63

........

x = 14.26 ft

x + 3 = 14.25 + 3 = 17.25 ft

The width of the fence is 14.25 ft.

The length of the fence is 17.25 ft.
