Problema Solution

A rubber ball is dropped from the top of a hole. Exactly 2.5 seconds later, the sound of the rubber ball hitting the bottom is heard. How deep is the hole?

Answer provided by our tutors

The distance that dropped object falls in t sec is represented by the formula s = 16t^2.

The speed of sound is 1100 ft/sec.

Let 't' represent the ball's travelling time.

The time taken for the sound to travel = distance/speed = 16t^2/1100 sec = 8t^2/550

Total time is:

t + 8t^2/550 = 2.5

........

t = 2.4152 s

s = 16*2.4152^2

s = 93.33 ft approximately

The hole 93.33 feet deep.
