Problema Solution
A silo, which is in the shape of a cylinder, is 16.0 ft in diameter and has a height of 30.0 ft. The silo is three-fourths full. Find the volume of the portion of the silo that is not being used for storage. Use 3.14 for pi and round to the nearest tenth.
Answer provided by our tutors
The volume of the cylinder is:
V = r^2*pi*H
where r is the radius and H is the height.
In our case r = 16/2 = 8 ft and H = 30 ft thus:
V = 8^2*pi*30
Since 3/4 are used for storage what is left is 1 - 3/4 = 1/4 of the silo is not being used for storage or:
(1/4)V = (1/4)*8^2*pi*30 = 480pi = 480*3.14 = 1507.2 ft^3.
