Problema Solution

A truck can travel

240 miles in the same time that it takes a car to travel

320 miles. If the truck's rate is

10 miles per hour slower than the car's, find the average rate for each.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

t = speed of the truck

c = speed of the car

Truck's rate is 10 mph slower than the car's means:

t = c - 10

Since average rate equals total distance divided by the time we have time equals distance divided by average rate, or:

240/t = 320/c cross-multiply

320t = 240c divide both sides by 80

4t = 3c

We have the following system of equations:

t = c - 10

4t = 3c

........

t = 30 mph

c = 40 mph

Tpeed of the car is 40 mph and speed of the truck is 30 mph.
