Problema Solution
a tug boat ca pull a boa 24mi downstream in 2hr going upstream the tugboat can pull the same boat 16 mi in 2hr what is the speed of the tug boat in still water
Answer provided by our tutors
Boat speed in still water =x mph
Current speed =y mph
Speed when traveling against wind = x-y
Speed when traveling with wind x+y
Distance upstream= 16 miles
Distance downstream = 24 miles
Time of the travel in each direction = 2 hr
Since distance = speed*time we have:
(x - y)*2 = 16
(x + y)*2 = 24

........
x = 10 mph
y = 2 mph
The speed of the tug boat in still water is 10 mph.
