Problema Solution

Aging Population

The number of U.S residents over the age of 65 was approximately 36.3 million in 2004 and 40.1 million in 2010.

Define the variables X and Y

Find an equation for the line containing the given data points

Estimate the number of U.S Residents over the age 65 in 2006-2016

Answer provided by our tutors

x = the number of years after 2004

y = the number of residents in millions

We have the following given points:

(0, 36.3) and (6, 40.1) (6 since 2010 - 2004 = 6)

The equation for the straight line trough (0, 36.3) and (6, 40.1) is:

y - 40.1 = (40.1 - 36.3)/(6 - 0)(x - 6)

........

click here to see the simplification of the equation

........

y = (19/30)x + (1089/30)

The number of U.S Residents over the age 65 in 2006-2016 is:

For the year of 2006 we have:

x = 2006 - 2004 = 2

y = (19/30)*2 + (1089/30)

y = 37.6 million

For the year of 2007 we have:

x = 2007 - 2004 = 3

y = (19/30)*3 + (1089/30)

y = 38.2 million

And so on.
