Problema Solution
An architect has allocated a rectangular space of 253 ft squared for a square dining room and a 12 ft wide kitchen. Find both the width of the square dining room and the length of the entire rectangular space.
Answer provided by our tutors
We are going to assume that the kitchen and the dining room have the same width.
Let 'x' represent the width of the dinning room, x>=0.
Then the length of the large rectangle is x + 12 and the width is x:

The area of the rectangle equals width multiplied by length thus:
x(x + 12) = 253

........
x = 11 ft
We need to ignore the negative solution because the width can only be positive.
x + 12 = 12 + 11 = 23 ft
The width of the dining room is 11 ft.
The length of the dining room is 23 ft.
