Problema Solution

An engine system consists of three main components in a series, all having the same reliability. Determine the level of reliability required for each of the components if the engine is to have a reliability of 0.998. (Round answer to 4 decimal places, e.g. 15.2500.)

Reliability is the ability of a system to perform its function under stated condition:

Reliability of the System = R1*R2*R3, where R1, R2 and R3 represent reliability of components in the system.

In our case R1 = R2 = R3 = R thus we have:

R*R*R = 0.998

R^3 = 0.998

R = 0.9993

The level of reliability for each component should be 0.9993.
