Problema Solution

An oil tank has to be drained for maintenance. The tank is shaped like a cylinder that is 4.5 ft long with a diameter of 1.6 ft . Suppose oil is drained at a rate of 1.9 ft3 per minute. If the tank starts completely full, how many minutes will it take to empty the tank? Use the value 3.14 for π , and round your answer to the nearest minute.

We assume the cylinder is a right cylinder.  Volume of such a cylinder is "V= πr^2h" and the volume drained is provided as 1.9ft^3 per minute.  A cylinder full of oil is drained and once the oil has completely drained, the volume is equal to the volume drained.

radius = diameter/2.

Let 'm' represent the number of minutes:

1.9m= (3.14)(1.6/2)^2(4.5)

click here to solve for the number of minutes it takes to drain

m=(144(3.14))/95=4.7595

It would take approximately 5 minutes to completely drain.
