Problema Solution

Corey wants to fence three sides of a rectangular exercise yard for his dog. The fourth side of the exercise yard will be a side of the house. He has

180

180 feet of fencing available. Find the dimensions that will enclose the maximum area

Answer provided by our tutors

Let 'x' the length of one side then the length of the other side is y = 180 - 2x.

The area of the yard is:

A = x*(180 - 2x)

A = -2x^2 + 180x

x max = -b/2a, where a = -2, b = 180

x max = -180/(2*(-2))

x max = 45 ft

180 - 2*45 = 90 ft

The dimensions of the rectangular area are 45 ft and 90 ft.
