Problema Solution
Gerry went flying on a windy day. He flew at a steady 145 mph. He Flew 36 miles against the wind in the same time it took him to fly 51 miles with the wind. find the speed of the wind.
Answer provided by our tutors
Let
w = the speed of the wind
v = 145 mph the steady speed
v - w = the speed against the wind
v + w = the speed with the wind
d1 = 36 mi the distance opposite the wind
d2 = 51 mi the distance with the wind
Since speed = distance/time follows time = distance/speed:
d1/(v - w) = d2/(v + w)
36/(145 - w) = 51/(145 + w)

........
w = 25 mph
The speed of the wind is 25 miles per hour.
