Problema Solution
How many square yards of canvas would be required to make a conical tent 10 feet high and 12 feet in diameter?
Answer provided by our tutors
Assuming the for the tent we also need to have a cover for the base of the tent where it will stand on the ground follows that we need to find the area of a cone with height of 10 feet and 12 feet diameter.
h = 10 ft is the heigh
d = 12 ft is the dimeter
r = d/2 = 12/2= 6 ft is the radius
l = slant height
A = the area
A = r^2pi + r*pi*l
First we find the slant height by using the Pythagorean Theorem:
l^2 = h^2 + r^2
l^2 = 10^2 + 6^2
l^2 = 136
l = 11.66 ft
Now we plug the values in the formula for area:
A = 6^2*pi + 6*pi*11.66 (pi = 3.14)
A = 332.71 ft^2 approximately
Approximately 332.71 ft^2 of canvas would be needed to make a conical tent.
