Problema Solution
Hudson travels 1080 miles in
a jet and then 240 miles by car to
get to a business meeting. The jet
goes 300 mph faster than the rate
of the car, and the car ride takes
1 hour longer than the jet. What is
the speed of the car?
Answer provided by our tutors
d1 = 1080 mi the distance traveled by jet
t = the time spent traveling with the jet
d2 = 240 mi the distance traveled by car
t + 1 = the time spent traveling with the car
Since speed = distance/time and the rate on the jet is 300 mph faster than the rate of the car we have:
d1/t = d2/(t + 1) + 300
1080/t = 240/(t + 1) + 300

click here to see the equation solved for t
........
t = 3 hr
t + 1 = 3 + 1 = 4 hr
240/4 = 60 mph
The speed of the car is 60 mph.
