Problema Solution

If a new road is built, it will take 20 minutes to drive between 2 towns at an average speed of 45 miles per hour. How far apart are these two towns?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

t =  20 min = 20/60 hr = 1/3 hr the time of the drive

v = 45 mph the average speed

d = the distance between the cities

Since average speed = distance/time we have:

v = d/t multiply both sides by t

d = v*t

d = 45*(1/3)

d = 15 mi

The two towns are 15 miles apart.
