Problema Solution
If everyone had the same body proportions, your weight in pounds would vary directly with the cube of your height in ft. Assume the average height and weight of a female in your math class is 5ft 5 in and 135 pounds. Use this information to write a variation equation then use it to find the weight of the female below if she had the same body type as the average female. Round answer to the nearest pound. Kelly 5ft 4 in
Answer provided by our tutors
w = C*h^3, where w is weight, h is height, and C is constant
h = 5 ft 5 in
1 ft = 12 in
1 in = 1/12 ft
5 in = 5/12 ft
h = 5 + 5/12 ft
135 = C(5 + 5/12)^3
C(5 + 1/12)^3 = 135

........
C = 1.028
The equation is:
w = 1.028*h^3
Kelly's height is 5ft 4 in = 5 + 4/12 ft = 5 + 1/3 ft
w = 1.028(5 + 1/3)^3
w = 156 lbs
Kelly's weight is 156 lbs rounded to the nearest pound.
