Problema Solution

Jared is training for a cross country cycling race. He ride 62 miles in 2 hours. After the first 50 miles through the foothills, he increases his speed by 6 miles per hour as he rode on flat roads for the last 12 miles...find Jared's cycling speed through the foothills.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

v = Jared's initial speed though the foothills

v + 6 = Jared's speed on the flat road

d1 = 50 mi

d2 = 12 mi

t = 2 hr

Since speed = distance/time follows time = distance/speed:

d1/v + d2/(v + 6) = t

50/v + 12/(v + 6) = 2

........

v = 30 mph

We need to ignore the negative solution -5 since the speed can only be positive.

Jared's cycling speed through the foothills was 30 mph.
