Problema Solution

One hose can fill a small swimming pool in

50

minutes. A larger hose can fill the pool in

30

minutes. How long will it take the two hoses to fill the pool working together?

Answer provided by our tutors

The rate of the hose that fills the swimming pool in 50 minutes is: 1/50 pool per minute.

The rate of the hose that fills the swimming pool in 30 minutes is: 1/30 pool per minute.

Let 'x' represent the time it takes for the pool to fill when the two hoses are working together.

The together rate of the the hoses is: 1/x pool per minute.

Now we can write the equation:

1/50 + 1/30 = 1/x

........

........

x = 18.75 min

x = 18 min 0.75*60 sec

x = 18 min 45 sec

When both hoses are working it will take 18 minutes and 45 seconds to fill the pool.
