Problema Solution
Pupils in a class are told to choose 1 out of three sport options: tennis, basketball and badminton. Given that the pupils choose the options in the ratio 4:2:3 and that 20 choose tennis, find
a) the number of pupils in class
b) the number of pupils who choose badminton
Answer provided by our tutors
Let
x = the number of pupils that chose basketball
y = the number of pupils that chose badminton
20 : x : y = 4 : 2 : 3
20 : x = 4 : 2
x = (20*2)/4
x = 10 pupils choose basketball
20 : y = 4 : 3
y = (20*3)/4
y = 15 pupils choose badminton
a) 20 + 10 + 15 = 25 pupils in the class
b) 15 pupils choose badminton
