Problema Solution

The owner of Nuts2U Snack Shack mixes cashews worth $5.50 a pound with peanuts worth $2.00 a pound to get a half-pound, mixed-nut bag worth $1.90. How much of each kind of nut is included in the mixed bag?

Are you sure the cashews cost $5.50? The problem works so much easier at $5.60/lb. If cashews instead cost 5.60, the answer is .25 lbs each.

Answer as shown: .25714 lbs of Cashews and .24286 lbs of peanuts

Work:

a) 1.9 = 5.5C + 2.0P

b) .5 = C + P

Therefore 2*(b) -- 1 = 2C+ 2P

Reduce using new (b)

1.9 - 1 = (5.5c-2c) + (2p-2p)

.9 = 3.5c

c=.9/3.5=9/35=.2571

Subsitute, into [.5=C+P]

.5 = .2571 + P

P = .2429 lbs
