Problema Solution

A vendor sells hot dogs and bags of potato chips. A customer buys 4 hot dogs and 2 bags

of potato chips for $9.00. Another customer buys 5 hot dogs and 3 bags of potato chips for

$11.75. Find the cost of each item.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let x be the cost of a hot dog and y be the cost of a bag of potato chips. This gives us the system:

4x +2y = 9. . . . . . . . . . . .(1)

5x + 3y = 11.75. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(2)

Multiplying (1) by 3 and (2) by 4 gives:

12x + 6y = 27. . . . . . . . . .(3)

10x + 6y = 23.5. . . . . . . . . . . .(4)

Subtracting (3) from (4) gives x = 1.75.

put value of X in eqn 1

y=1

hence cost of hot dogs =$1.75 and  and cost of bags of potato chips=1
