Problema Solution

There were only 3 entries in this year's Senior division of Weiner dog racing. Barney was the oldest and got a 12ft. head start. He ran at a rate of 3 ft. every 2 seconds. Chuckles, the 2nd oldest, got a 6 ft. head start and ran at a rate of 7 ft. every 3 seconds. Lulu, being the youngest, had to start at the starting line. She ran at a rate of 3 ft. per second.

Write an equation for each dog. x= # of seconds

y= feet from starting line

Which dog was the fastest?

How many seconds will it take Lulu to catch up to Barney and how far have they run at this point?

What order did they finish if the race was 40 ft?

Answer provided by our tutors

B = 12 +3/2 x

C = 6+ 7/3 x

L = 3x

Lulu is the fastest.

3x = 12 +3/2 x

3/2 x = 12 --> x =8 seconds. 24 ft.

Order:

1) L = 120 ft

2) C = 99.33 ft

3) B = 72 ft
