two cars start at the same location and travel in the same direction at average speeds of 40 miles per hour and 55 miles per hour. How much time must elapse before the two cars are 10 miles apart?

let time be x hrs when cars are 10miles apart
speed of cars are 40 mph and 55 mph
distances covered by cars in x hrs are 40x and 55x miles
hence as cars are travelling in same direction, i.e. 55x - 40x = 10
i.e. 15x = 10 gives , x = 10/15 =(2/3)hrs = (2×60)/3 = 40 minutes
hence , cars will be 10 miles apart after 40minutes.
