Problema Solution
One leg of a right triangle is 7 metres longer than the other leg. If the length of the hypotenuse is 17 metres, find the length of each leg.
Answer provided by our tutors
let x be one leg
so another leg is y=x+7
and hypotenuse -17m
x^2 +y^2=17^2
x^2+(x+7)^2=289
2x^2 + 49+14x=289
2x^2-240+14x=0
x^2-120+7x=0
x^2+15x-8x+120=0
(x+15)(x-8)=0
so x=8and y=15
