Problema Solution

ellen wishes to mix candy worth $1.88 per pound with candy worth $3.09 per pound to form 30 pounds of a mixture worth $2.65 per pound. how many pounds of the more expensive candy should she use?

Answer provided by our tutors

LOW COST CANDY MIXED BE  = x

high cost = 30-x

price total  = 30 * 2.65  =  79.5

this total price is by mixing  x candies and 30-x candies of low and high price respectivel as assumed

hence  this can be written as     1.88 *x  +  (30-x) * 3.09    = 1.88x-3.09x + 92.7    = 79.5

hence we get

    1.21 x = 13.2

   x = 11

more expensive candy should be  30-11 = 19
