First, we need to convert the inches to feet. So we have 18in=1.5ft and 24in=2ft.
Then, we have to add three times the length of each pc plus twice the length of the space between them plus twice the space at the end of the counter.
By doing this we get 3(1.5)+2(4)+2(3).
Evaluating this expression results to 18.5. The length of the counter must be 18.5.
