A total of tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was three times the number of adult tickets sold . How many adult tickets were sold?

let the number of adult tickets = x
let the number of student tickets = y
according to the question
x+y=441 [ equation 1 ]
and,
y=2x [equation 2]
put the value of y from equation 2 in equation 1
then,
equation 1 becomes:
x+2x=441
=> 3x=441
=> x = 441/3 = 147
therefore 147 adult tickets were sold.
