A letter coin purse has the shape of a triangle.Two sides are equal in lenght and the third side is 3 centimeters shorter than one and one-half times the lenght of the equal sides.The perimeter is 28.5 centimeters.Find the lenghts of the sides.

Let the length of one equal side be x. Then the shorter side is 1.5x-3 and the perimeter is x + x + 1.5x-3. Therefore we have
x + x + 1.5x-3 = 28.5
3.5x = 28.5
x = 28.5/3.5 = 8.14
So the two equal sides are each 8.14 cm long. Finally the third side is
1.5*8.14 - 3= 9.21429 cm long
