Problema Solution

Two trains leave the station at the same time, one heading east and the other west. The eastbound train travels 10 miles per hour faster than the westbound train. If the two trains are 320 miles apart after 2 hours, what is the rate of the eastbound train?

Answer provided by our tutors

on train is traveling at v mph and the other is traveling at (v+10) mph

distance divided by the sum of their velocities in mph equals two hours:

320 / (v + v + 10) = 2

320 = 2(2v+10)

320 = 4v + 20

v = 300/4 = 75

v=75mph, so the other train is traveling at v+10=85mph
