What does "extraenous solution" mean? What must we do to determine whether a solution is an extraenous solution?

It means that the solution is not actually a solution.
You only know if it is one by plugging your answers back into the original equation. If the equation is true it is not extraneous, but if it is not true, it is an extraneous solution because it doesn't work.
