Problema Solution

In 2001, 426 billion cigarettes were consumed in the United States.In 2007, 360 billion cigarettes were consumed. Let x represent years and y represent the number of cigarettes consumed.

a)Write two ordered pairs which can be used to find a model for this data.

b)Find the slope between the two points in a)

c)Interpret the slope.What information does the slope give you? Be sure to label slope.

Answer provided by our tutors

a) two ordered pairs can be

(2001,426) and (2007,360)

where x coordinate is the year and y coordinate is the number of cigarettes consumed in billions.

equation for the line can be written as:

(y-426)/(x-2001)=(360-426)/(2007-2001)

=> y-426=-11(x-2001)

b) slope=(360-426)/(2007-2001)=-11

c)slope is negative which means cigarettes consumption has decreased from 2001 to 2007.
