One number is 7 less than a second number. Twice the second number is 4 less than 5 times the first. Find the smaller of two numbers.

Let x and y be numbers.
x=y-7 --- (i)
2y=5x-4 --(ii)
Solving (i) and (ii) simultaneously,
3x=18
x=6.
and y=x+7=13
so smaller of the two numbers is 6.
