Problema Solution
Chris and Terry have been trying to live within their budget, but miss going out to dinner on Friday nights. They decide not to spend any nickels or quarters they receive as change for a month and save these in a jar. A the end of the second week they have a total of 90 coins in the jar. The value of the coins totals $15.10. How many nickels and how many quarters are in the jar?
Answer provided by our tutors
let nickel = A, and quarter = B,
1 nickel = 5 cents and 1 quarter = 25 cents,
1 dollar = 100 cents
so, first equation is A + B = 90, and second equation is 5A + 25B = 1510
we can subtitute first equation to second equation, A = 90 - B,
so, we have.
5(90-B) + 25B = 1510
450 - 5B + 25B = 1510
20B = 1510-450
20B = 1060
B = 1060/20 = 53
A = 90 - 53 = 37
So, we have 37 nickels and 53 quarters in the jar
