Problema Solution
8. A basket contains some bananas and oranges. The ratio of the number of the bananas to the number of oranges in the basket is 5:6. Some bananas were added to the basket and the number of bananas increased by 50%. By what percent must the number of oranges be increased so that there will be an equal number of oranges and bananas?
Answer provided by our tutors
Suppose initially there are 10 bannanas and 12 oranges (5:6). Let increase the number of bananas with 50%. Nr banans is 10 +50%*10 =10+0.5*10 =10+5 =15 bananas
Now the number of oranges need to be equal. Nr oranges = 15 oragnes.
Initial nr of oranges is 12. Increase in oranges is 15-12 =3 oranges.
3 oranges from 12 initial means 3/12 =1/4 =0.25 =25%
