Frank and Joseph sell shoes. Last month Frank sold 18 less pairs of shoes than Joseph. Together they sold 52 pairs. How many pairs of shoes did Frank sell?

Take the number of pairs Frank sold = F , the number of pairs Joseph sold = J
because Frank sold 18 less pairs than Joseph,
F= J - 18
that mean, J - F =18 ---1st equation
then because together they sold 52 pairs,
F + J = 52 --- 2nd equation
Then, from these two equations we get,
2J = 70
J = 35.
and now from the second equation,
F = 17.
So Frank sold 17 pairs of shoes.
