Problema Solution

An eastbound train and a westbound train meet each other on parallel tracks heading in opposite directions. The eastbound train travels 16 miles per hour faster than the westbound train. After 2.5 hours, they are 320 miles apart. At what speeds are the two trains traveling?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let the speed of westbound train=x

So, Speed of eastbound train=x+16.

After 2.5 hours, they are 320 miles apart.

Therefore,

x*2.5+(x+16)(2.5)=320

2.5x+2.5x+40=320

5x=280

x=56

So, Speed of westbound train=56 miles per hour.

Speed of eastbound train=56+16=72 miles per hour.
