The best way to do this is trial and error. We know that 1/8 is quarters, so 7/8's are nickels. So let's start with quarters.
7*.25= 1.75
49*.05=2.45

6* .25 = 1.50
42* .05 = 2.10

Answer: Total coins: 48, and 6 are quarters leaving 42 to be nickels.
