Problema Solution

Farmer Brown had ducks and cows. One day she noticed that the animals had a total of 12 heads and 32 feet. How many of the animals were ducks and how many were cows?

Answer provided by our tutors

we assume there is no trickery with regards to the terminologies 'head' and 'feet':

1 cow brings 1 head and 4 feet

1 duck brings 1 head and 2 feet

if there are 12 heads, then clearly there are 12 total animals, so let 'x' represent the number of ducks, then '12-x' represents the number of cows and we have this equation for the number of feet:

32 = 2x + 4(12-x)

solving for 'x' we have x=8

12-8 = 4

so there are 8 ducks and 4 cows
