Problema Solution

Mike and jane leave their home on bikes traveling in opposite direction on a straight road. Mike rides 5mph faster than jane. After 4 hours they are 124 miles apart. At what rate does mike ride his bike?

Answer provided by our tutors

let 'x' represent jane's speed, then 'x+5' represents Mike's speed and since they are travelling in opposite directions, 'x+x+5=2x+5' represents their relative speed

their average speed:

124 miles / 4 = 31 mph

31mph = 2x+5

2x = 26

x = 13

13+5=18

Jane is riding at 13mph, Mike is riding at 18mph
