A jogger runs a distance at a speed of 8 miles per hour and returns the same distance running at a speed of 6 miles per hour. Find the total distance that the jogger ran if the total time running was 1 hour and 45 minutes.

the distance to and from was the same, so we set the speed * time expressions equal to each other
1 hour and 45 min. is equal to 1.75 hours
let 'x' represent the time run at 8mph, then '1.75-x' represents the time run at 6mph and we have:
8x = 6(1.75-x)
solving for 'x' we have x=0.75
8mph was run for 0.75 hours, giving a distance of:
8*0.75 = 6 miles
the jogger ran a total of 6*2=12 miles, 6 miles at 8pmh and 6 additional miles at 6mph
