Problema Solution

a train leaves station and travels north at a speed of 50mph, five hours later, a second train leaves on a parallel track and travels north at 175 mph. how far from the station will they meet?

Answer provided by our tutors

distance = speed * rate

the trains leave from the same location and meet, therefore the distances are the same and we set their speed*rate expressions equal to each other

let 't' represent the time travelled at 175 mph, then 't+5' represents the time travelled at 50 mph and we have:

175t = 50(t+5)

solving for 't' we have t=2

the faster train travelled for 2 hours at 175 mph:

2* 175 = 350

the trains travelled 350 miles
