Problema Solution

If a parade 2 mi long is proceeding at 2 mph, how long will it take a runner jogging at 7 mph to travel from the front of the parade to the end of the parade?

Answer provided by our tutors

the jogger and parade are heading in opposite directions since the jogger is running from the front of the parade to the read of the parade

let 'd' represent the distance run by the jogger, then '2-d' represents the distance marched by the rear of the parade

distance = speed * time

time = distance / speed

they will both travel the same amount of time (we assume the beginning and ending portions of the parade begin to march at the same time, or that the jogger waits until the entire parade is moving), so we set their distance/speed expressions equal to each other

d/7 = (2-d)/2

solving for 'd' we have d=1.56

they meet after 1.56 miles, the jogger running at 7mph

(1.56/7) * 60 = 13.37

the jogger reaches the end of the parade in approximately 13.4 minutes
