Two boats leave a port at the same time, one going north and the other traveling south. The northbound boat travels 16 mph faster than the southbound boat. If the southbound boat is traveling at 47 mph, how long will it be before they are 1430 miles apart ?

the southbound boat is travelling at 47mph, so the northbound boat is travelling at '47+16=63' mph
they are travelling in opposite directions so we can add their velocities to determine total velocity:
47+63 = 110
let 't' represent the time in hours when they are 1430 miles apart
distance = speed * time
1430 = 110t
t = 1430/110 = 13
in 13 hours they will be 1430 miles apart
