Problema Solution
A hiker named red rogue took a hike up a mountain. He climbed to the top of the mountain at the average speed of about 1.1 miles per hour. From the top red rogue went down the mountain on the same trail, but this time his average speed was 1.65 miles per hour. It took him one hour more to hike to the top of the mountain than to hike down the mountain. How long did it take, in hours, for the entire hike?
Answer provided by our tutors
distance = speed * time
let 'x' represent the time in hour it took to hike up the mountain, then 'x+1' represents the time it took to hike down the mountain
the distance up and down is assumed to be the same, so we set their speed*time expressions equal to each other:
1.1(x+1) = 1.65x
solving for 'x' we have x=2
2+1 = 3
the hike was 3 hours up and 2 hours down, for a total time of 5 hours
